At under $500, the ASUS A55A-AH31-WT is affordable enough for students, researchers and casual users. It's features and specs are also great for those that work from home It can perform simple and basic tasks such as browsing the web, typing your documents and listening to songs.

While it’s a solid machine, it isn’t fast enough for playing high- powered games or for intensive photo editing and manipulation. If you are a gamer, then this A55A-AH31-WT is not for you.

Pros:
  • Good sound speakers
  • Affordable and great specs for casual users
Cons:
  • Graphics card not for gamers

The laptop is powered by an Intel 2.4 GHz Core i3-3110M dual core processor. It has got enough muscle to run large Excel databases and heavily formatted Word documents though. The ASUS A55A-AH31-WT also has 4 GB of RAM and is sufficient for browsing with multiple tabs open. If you are a gamer, you probaly want to go for higher RAM, at least 6GB. The laptop has a 750GB, 5400 RPM hard disk, and this is a pleasant surprise, as 750GB disks are usually found on more expensive laptops. Unless you fill it up with a lot of games, the storage space will last you a while. The A55A-AH31-WT uses the Intel GMA HD graphics card, and it works fine with regular applications, videos and movies. However, it isn’t good enough for games like Torchlight 2 and Diablo III. We were able to play them, but only at low settings, and adjusting the resolution to high slowed the system down. The laptop has a 15.6 inch high definition 1366 x 768 screen, and while it isn’t the highest resolution we’ve seen on a laptop, the pictures are still very clear and colors produced accurately because of the Full HD.

The fact that we love this ASUS A55A-AH31-WT is that the Ice cool technology. This technology keeps palm rest and typing surfaces cool even after prolonged use. That said, your laptop won't get heated up easily. Besides that, there is also the Instant-on technology means the user can boot up one program instantly, instead of waiting for the PC's entire operating system to boot. This is a great feature for those that don't like to wait the operating system to load up. The ASUS A55A-AH31-WT has three USB ports, one for USB 2.0 and two for USB 3.0, so you can connect a memory stick and other devices. You can transfer huge files using USB 3.0 because it's transfer speed is 10 times faster than the USB 2.0. It also has one VGA port for hooking to another projector. There is also a HDMI port for you to view videos and photos on the HDTV or external monitor.

The ASUS A55A-AH31-WT is a nice laptop, suitable for Internet surfing and running simple applications. It can’t compare with more expensive laptops, but at the $500 price range, this one’s hard to beat.
